Seven Lively Artists

David R. Henry

David R. HenryDavid R. Henry became a member of the Seven Lively Artists in 1995. Always involved in outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, jogging, bicycling, gardening, etc., Henry's interest in art was first inspired by the artwork of Ned Smith and various wildlife art illustrations in sporting journals. A book of paintings by Winslow Homer led to an interest in watercolor painting and drawing. Henry focused this interest through classes in the early 1980's at HACC, the Harrisburg Art Association and Mechanicsburg Art Center, studying with David Lenker, Tina Reily, Barbara Passari Warfel, Barbara Buer, Pat Keogh, Leo Gilroy and others.

Henry's interest in landscape painting evolved further when in 1997 he enrolled in a plein air painting class at the Harrisburg Art Association with John David Wissler, an accomplished landscape painter and teacher. This plein air painting experience fueled his passion for the landscape and inspired more serious efforts at his art.

He was born in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania in 1947 and lived in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania. At age 9  Henry's family moved to Mechanicsburg where he attended Mechanicsburg Schools, graduating from high school in 1965. Henry graduated from Pennsylvania State University and California State College (Pa) with degrees in Business and Economics. He worked for the City of Harrisburg City Planning Bureau beginning in 1972 and then in 1980 for the Pennsylvania Department of Health as a health insurance regulator and administrator with the Bureau of Managed Care. Henry retired from the Commonwealth in 2006 and devotes time to plein air painting and his other outdoor interests.

Favorite artists include John F. Carlson, George Innes, Winslow Homer, Emille Gruppe, Walter Baum, Edward Redfield, William Wendt, Edgar Payne and Chauncey F. Ryder.
